Though almost all of the competitors looked dramatically different after losing so much weight, Danni looked absolutely transformed: Poised, chiseled and she had her swagger on.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">Come to think of it, she could have been channeling her trainer, <a class="taxInlineTagLink" href="http://www.latimes.com/topic/health/physical-fitness-exercise/jillian-michaels-PECLB0015224.topic" id="PECLB0015224" style="color: #666666; text-decoration: none;" title="Jillian Michaels">Jillian Michaels</a>. Danni's victory came after she lost each and every one of her teammates in the early weeks of the competition, until it was just Danni and Jillian. </div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">Jillian was so certain of Danni's victory that she refused at one point in the middle of the show to hug her trainee, saying that the "first" hug would come after the confetti was raining down on Danni's head.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">"I can't believe this is real," Danni said after she'd been declared the winner. "I am in disbelief. It allowed her to have Jillian's full attention, but that also made for extra punishment in the gym. Jillian said that one of the most powerful tools the pair used to propel Danni to victory was visualization. "We saw it, we had to see it, we envisioned it, and we made it happen," Jillian said. </div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">Second-place victory went to Jeff Nichols, 25, of Monroe, Mich., who started the show at 388 pounds, a girth he gained in part by turning to food in the wake of his father's death. She joined the cast at 245 pounds and lost 113 pounds, or 46.12% of her body weight. She fell <em>just short</em> of the 46.90% lost by Danni and the 46.65% lost by Jeff. </div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">Her win was no surprise, given that she lasted on the ranch until last week and dominated the weigh-ins while there. Still, had she made the final three, it would not have been enough to edge out Danni or Jeff. </div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">All things being equal, that means Jeff would have been declared the at-home winner had he been eliminated last week instead of Gina. David? He looked about 15 years younger, fit and trim and showing off those guns. (The biceps, not the sidearms issued as part of his law enforcement duties.) Lisa, the 37-year-old mom from Houlton, Wis. came on stage to wolf whistles from the live audience -- yes, she looked that good.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px;">The finale made "Biggest Loser" history for its youngest players, the so-called "kids" who were part of the show this year. Their reveals were remarkable: They've grown up before our eyes and combined shed more than 100 pounds. It was never about the weight for the kids, though, it was about teaching them to embrace life and healthful eating habits. They did that, each mirroring what the show and their coaches taught them. Biingo channeled a preppy Bob Harper and his happy-go-lucky style, Lindsay mirrored Dolvett's intensity and brilliant smile and Jillian's ward, Sunny, was the picture of poise and self-confidence. Was that the most picture-perfect prom dress in history? Afternoon tea

<p>We had Ciaran's parents for tea this afternoon.  I decided to serve sandwiches and apple tart with cream.  I got the apple tart in the <a href="http://www.thebutlerspantry.ie/">Butler's Pantry</a> and also picked up a fudge cake in Superquinn. I made a round of crumbled ham & cheese sandwiches.  I would normally make much fancier canapes when having friends for afternoon tea but I think older people like more traditional simple food. Her 10-month-old son, snug in his Ergo carrier, survived, barely injured. Wachenheim died from her injuries. According to the <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 12px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic; ">New York Times</em>, the 44-year-old Wachenheim left behind a 13-page suicide note in which she wrote that she was convinced that her son might have autism or cerebral palsy because he had two minor tumbles—the kind most babies have at some point—and she felt responsible. Her pediatrician did not believe anything was wrong with the child, but she was convinced her son was damaged and that it was her fault.</p></div><div class="text parbase section" style="margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 12px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 18px; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; "><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1.25em; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 12px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.5em; ">It's pretty clear that Wachenheim was suffering from <a href="http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/2002/feb/postpartum/020218.postpartum.html" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">postpartum psychosis</a> and was not, to use a cliché that doesn't feel like it expresses the gravity of the situation, in her right mind. No mother, especially a woman who by all accounts was an upstanding and decent person, would do this to herself or her child unless she was in the throes of an awful, debilitating mental illness. That didn't stop <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 12px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic; ">Above the Law</em>'s Elie Mystal from <a href="http://abovethelaw.com/2013/03/attorney-jumps-to-her-death-cradling-her-baby-the-baby-is-fine/?show=comments#comments" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">writing a painfully ignorant post about Wachenheim</a> in which he calls her "a monster" and says that because his family just had a newborn, he's "acutely aware of all the time hospitals, pediatricians, and psychiatrists put in telling new parents how to handle the feelings of anxiety and sometimes depression that affect new parents." He also assumes that Wachenheim refused to seek out "readily available help with her mental health issues" based on no evidence. He says that because she had the money and education to deal with her mental health, she is a monster for not fixing it.</p></div><div class="text parbase section" style="margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 12px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 18px; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; "><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1.25em; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 12px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.5em; ">I don't purport to know where Mystal's partner gave birth or what her experience was. But just because she was well-informed about the risk of depression before and after pregnancy doesn't mean everyone is. I know from the survey I did of more than 1,000 women <a href="http://www.slate.com/articles/double_x/doublex/features/2012/why_isn_t_anyone_talking_about_prenatal_depression_/pregnancy_and_prenatal_depression_why_didn_t_anyone_warn_me_i_would_feel_so_bad_.html" style="color: rgb(0, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">on pregnancy and depression</a> that many women don't get <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 12px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic; ">any</em> information from hospitals, pediatricians, or psychiatrists on depression or anxiety and get no support from their families. Secondly, even psychiatrists treating patients in the hospital (and immediate inpatient hospitalization is the recommendation for women experiencing postpartum psychosis) have a notoriously bad track record at predicting <a href="http://www.primarypsychiatry.com/aspx/articledetail.aspx?articleid=1388" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">which ones will commit suicide</a>. We don't know what went on in Wachenheim's final days, but it's quite possible that her family members—despite having advanced degrees—did not realize how bad things were or were in denial about her mental health. </p></div><div class="text parbase section" style="margin: 1.5em 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 12px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: verdana, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 18px; orphans: 2; text-align: -webkit-auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; "><p style="margin: 0px 0px 1.25em; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 12px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.5em; ">According to <a href="http://www.health.ny.gov/community/pregnancy/health_care/perinatal/maternal_factsheet.htm" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">New York state health department stats</a> cited by the <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-size: 12px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic; ">Times</em>, postpartum psychosis affects one to two out of every 1,000 new moms; of those one to two moms, 5 percent commit suicide and 4 percent commit infanticide. "Symptoms may appear abruptly" according to the health department, so Mystal's assumption that she would have even had time to get help is really dim. Still, it's alarming how much they reflect the current thinking about how much mothers are responsible for the ultimate sound health of their newborns. What they eat, what they don't eat, what mood they are in, how long they wait to get pregnant, even what music they listen to—mothers are constantly reminded that every move they make can leave lasting damage on a baby and make them more prone to get even serious diseases like autism and other developmental disorders. Of course Wachenheim's psychotic mind could have grabbed onto some other anxiety if fears of autism weren't so outsized in the United States.
