In fact, these two countries that despise each other so much were once allies. This is not ancient history. Both pre- and post-Revolutionary IRAN had extensive military and economic ties with the Jewish state. As recently as two decades ago, each country considered the other a vital friend in a region filled with hostile enemies. And yet, the requirements of IRANIAN national interest trumped ideology to force the Islamic government to cooperate with ISRAEL on a number of issues. Once the U.S.-supported IRAQI government invaded IRAN, the PERSIAN state turned to ISRAEL for much-needed arms. Phantom fighter planes and weapons for the IRANIAN army were sent by ISRAEL. <a href="http://www.washington-report.org/backissues/1186/8611002.html" target="_blank">One estimate</a> puts ISRAEL’S arms sales to IRAN at $500 million annually.<br /><br />  <span style="color: #cc0000;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">IRANIAN REGIME INCREASED ITS POISONOUS RHETORIC AGAINST ISRAEL IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN CREDIBILITY IN THE WIDER MUSLIM WORLD </b></span><br /><br />  In the mid-1980s ISRAEL was the conduit between IRAN and the Reagan administration during the illicit IRAN-Contra affair in which the Reagan administration sold weapons to the IRANIANS and used the proceeds to fund the anti-communist insurgency in NICARAGUA. Even as it was relying more on ISRAEL for arms in its war, the IRANIAN regime increased its poisonous rhetoric attacking ISRAEL, just as the Shah had done. Such rhetoric was meant to maintain credibility in the wider Muslim world, but wasn’t matched by action. “ISRAEL is IRAN’S best friend and we do not intend to change our position,” Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin said in 1987.<br /><br />  Two events caused the gradual splitting between the erstwhile allies. First, the SOVIET UNION collapsed in 1991, removing the greatest threat outside of the region to both nations’ security. Second, the weakening of IRAQ during the Persian Gulf War diluted its menace. Simply put, IRAN and ISRAEL needed each other less, as both were more secure in the post-Cold War world. The common threats that for decades had prompted the two states to cooperate and find common geo-strategic interests — in spite of IRAN’S transformation into an Islamist anti-Zionist state —no longer exist.<br /><br />  The ISRAELIS, who had long ignored IRANIAN rhetoric, decided it needed to be taken seriously, especially in light of the Islamic state’s support for Hamas and Hezbollah. IRAN worried about ISRAEL’S growing power and wanted to assert power in the region. IRAN once had a more pragmatic leadership and policies. The marginalization of the reformers that were popular in the 1990s meant that the extremist factions in the leadership became dominant. AMERICA’S invasion of Saddam Hussein’s IRAQ in 2003 removed that country’s threat to ISRAEL, leaving it with IRAN as the most menacing nation in the region.<br /><br />  <span style="color: #cc0000;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">CALCULATED TACTICS AND STRATEGIES IN ORDER TO OBTAIN MAXIMUM GEOPOLITICAL LEVERAGE </b></span><br /><br />  In recent past mainstream media and ISRAEL itself, increasingly stipulated that it is pushing for a preemptive airstrike on IRAN. Looking at ISRAEL history and how it conducts its wars and covert operations, it becomes imminent that it relies heavily on the element of surprise. Such was the case during most of its wars, rescue operations such as Entebbe, UGANDA in 1976, the IRAQI nuclear reactor air strike in 1981 and the alleged SYRIAN nuclear reactor airstrike in 2007. Thus as long as ISRAEL is “threatening” to attack IRAN on a daily base, and media coverage is in full swing, one can be sure that no such strike is imminent, for the element of surprise is lost. In most likelihood, ISRAEL’S threats of attacking IRAN and at the same time urging the USA to set a red line are calculated tactics and strategies in order to obtain certain concessions from the USA and indeed other allies. It is planned that these stories will be displayed on the African Storybook Project website when it is launched in July.  </span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">SchoolNet was thrilled when we were invited to view a lesson presented by one of the teachers who participated in the course and I thought I would write a blogpost about this exciting lesson. <span style="font-size: large;">The weather was great yesterday so it was a day of reading for me.  A batch of new books arrived in the library on Friday and thought this one looked good so I borrowed it.</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">It's the "Autobiography of us" by Aria Beth Sloss.</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">It was an easy read and I enjoyed the era it was set in - it started in the 1960's and was set in America.  I always think the difference between USA and Ireland in the 1950's and the 1960's was amazingly vast. Ireland only saw money coming in to the economy in the very late 1960's through the beginning of Foreign Direct Investment.  Prior to this it was quite backward and extremely rural, for example Ireland only became fully electrified in the late 1970's.  </span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">In this book there is a part where the main protagonist is preparing to go to college.  Although not from a well off background she gathers together a fairly extensive wardrobe that will see her through the college year and all of the events she will have to attend.  An 18 yr old in Ireland at that time would have a few staples to see her through the working week along with her "Sunday Best" for mass and dinner on Sunday!</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">But back to the book.  As I was reading it I realised that the author jumped over large sections where you had to assume what had happened.  I can be a little slow on the uptake so it took me awhile to cop where the story was going.  There was a slight twist near the end (which obviously I hadn't seen!) which gave a little bit of a lift to the story.</span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">Overall a book which is readable in a weekend and a very good effort from a first time novelist.</span><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtg9DeOsmoIrs1EALyWOivlyVRx8zPgo3gjuXjE-5stOO5qlXGHX8vZcSRvh5zlRLSvsBa9tYGY522GHVHt47xHEnux7GTIcoAUazSc1LDwdYSo_d3-5BtlSXA5AnFTa3XNE9jcPHQkEu4/s1600/20130526_094731.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"> <img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtg9DeOsmoIrs1EALyWOivlyVRx8zPgo3gjuXjE-5stOO5qlXGHX8vZcSRvh5zlRLSvsBa9tYGY522GHVHt47xHEnux7GTIcoAUazSc1LDwdYSo_d3-5BtlSXA5AnFTa3XNE9jcPHQkEu4/s400/20130526_094731.jpg" /> </a> </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">I know what you’re thinking.  NHL hockey and learning just don’t go together.  However, according to DNAInfo Chicago, a third grade student at Columbus Manor Elementary School took things to a <a href="http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20130524/chicago/9-x-9-hossa-third-grader-honors-blackhawks-star-math-exam">wholenew level</a> when she answered Hossa to the math problem 9x9.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">Of course, those knowledgeable of such things realize that the Chicago Blackhawks forward wears number 81, which makes young Maggie Ciara correct with her answer.  Puck Daddy reports that her teacher initially <a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/blackhawks-fan-answers-hossa-3rd-grade-math-test-171023862.html">circled the answer</a> with the notation “What is this?,” but once Ciara explained herself the A+ was in the bag.  Too bad the Hawks are not having such a time with the Red Wings.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal">In any event, the creativity demonstrated by the little girl and the ability of the teacher to inquire for clarification are all great signs that all is not lost in the education system.  The whole situation makes me smile and helps restore my faith in normal people.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><br /><div class="MsoNormal">Basically, the story here is the non-story.  Maggie did not receive a bad mark because she was being creative, and her teacher went the extra step to research the issue.  Both sides deserve to be the number one stars.<o:p></o:p></div>
