A while ago, as I was roaming the blogosphere, I happened upon a post by Peter Bogdanovich on his <i>Indiewire </i>blog <span style="font-size: small;">(appro<span style="font-size: small;">priately called <i>Blogdanovich</i>) titled "The Greatest Year?"  I read on, having always respected<span style="font-size: small;"> what Mr. B has to say about films and filmmaking. He not only possesses an ency<span style="font-size: small;">clopedic knowledge and intimate understanding of the subject, but has also made some classics of his own that I much admire - <i>The Last Picture Show</i> (1971), <i>What's Up, Doc? </i>(1972) and <i>Paper Moon </i>(1973).</span></span></span></span></span></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">With <span style="font-size: small;">"The Greatest Year?" Bo<span style="font-size: small;">gdanovich looked back on one of his 1972 columns for <i>Esquire </i>magazine. In that article he'd selected and reviewed a great movie year of the past to <span style="font-size: small;">ill<span style="font-size: small;">ustrate his contention that films of the early '70s weren't measuring up. He <span style="font-size: small;">zeroed in on 1939 in particular because in addition to the fact that it had been a banner year for movies, it was also the year he was born (as were Francis Co<span style="font-size: small;">ppola and William Friedkin, t<span style="font-size: small;">wo other major fil<span style="font-size: small;">mmaker<span style="font-size: small;">s of the time). Not long after Bo<span style="font-size: small;">gdanovich's column appeared in <i>Esquire</i>, he recalled, a leng<span style="font-size: small;">thier, more elaborate piece on the films of 1939 appeared in <i>Life </i>magazine wri<span style="font-size: small;">t<span style="font-size: small;">ten by film critic Richard Schickel. Schickel once and for all declared '39 to be <i>the</i> great year. <i>February is Book Month on A Daily Dose of Architecture. Most recent was the <a href="http://aplust.net/tienda/revistas/Serie%20STRATEGY/">Strategy series</a>; before it <a href="http://www.archidose.org/books/hybrids3.html">Hybrids</a>, <a href="http://archidose.blogspot.com/2008/07/book-review-civilities-i-and-ii.html">Civilities</a>, and so forth. These topics (focusing on landscapes, large buildings, and public buildings, respectively) respond to trends in the world of architecture while also taking critical positions toward them. Choosing to look at buildings that hybridize housing, offices, recreation, and other uses, for example, is a way to present projects like Steven Holl's <a href="http://www.world-architects.com/en/projects/project-review-detail/40177_sliced_porosity_block_in_chengdu">Sliced Porosity Block</a>, but the act also takes a position on how the city should evolve—taking into account a mix of uses, demographics, and other features that respond to the growing diversity of urban and suburban areas around the world.<br /><br />The publisher's newest series is <a href="http://aplust.net/tienda/revistas/Serie%20RECLAIM/">Reclaim</a>, which starts with a double issue subtitled "Remediate, Reuse, Recycle." The editors promote the series in an "environmental sense to reclaim the territory, the objects, the infrastructures and the materials [and] a call to reclaim dignity and citizen rights. It is a wake-up call to morally reclaim society using the Re- processes as atonement." In his introduction, Javier Mozas describes how the three subsets of Reclaim (remediate, reuse, recycle) into which the 82 projects are situated contain all of the other re-processes—rebuild, remake, reinvent, restore, etc. Of course, to reclaim, remediate, reuse, and recycle is to maintain and transform an existing building or landscape, therefore using less energy for demolition and construction of an alternatively new entity. In this sense Reclaim is an extension of Strategy—but one that works on smaller scales (Strategy dealt with landscape urbanism and other means of designing landscapes in cities)—and an increasing focus on sustainability as a path for continuity of the species.<br /><br />The order of the double issue's chapters—Remediate, Reuse, Recycle—means that the projects move from the large to the small, from the landscape to the building to the material. Therefore the chapters are not about figuring out what project goes where (a common tactic in many collections of contemporary architecture) or about typology (landscapes, for example, can also be found in the Recycle chapter), but about what it means to take part in the "re-" strategies. <br /><br />Like other a+t titles, the design, layout, and quality of presentation is exceptional, though with the new series a new design is in place. Nevertheless the editors' penchant for organizing and cross-referencing is still present. In particular, each project is tagged with page numbers to two chapters at the end the book; one describes the "agents" involved and how they worked together in either top-down or bottom-up scenarios, and the other shows their before-and-after conditions. These concluding chapters ground the 82 projects in action and time, aiding in the discovery of what lessons can be learned beyond the pretty pictures and drawings.

Among fibromyalgia patients taking either of two commonly prescribed drugs to reduce pain, 22 percent report substantial improvement while 21 percent had to quit the regimen due to unpleasant side effects, according to a new review in The Cochrane Library.<br /><br><br /><br>People with fibromyalgia suffer from chronic widespread pain, sleep problems and fatigue. The illness affects more than 5 million Americans, 80 percent of whom are women. The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown and currently there is no cure. Using a Quality of Life (QOL) scale for fibromyalgia, the studies reviewed reported QOL ratings lower than 15 on a scale of 0 to 100 even among patients on medications. The two medications often prescribed to treat fibromalgia are duloxetine, known by the brand name Cymbalta or milnacipran, commonly known as Savella.<br /><br><br /><br>"A frank discussion between the physician and patient about the potential benefits and harms of both drugs should occur," noted the reviewers, led by Winfried Häuser, M.D. of Technische Universität München.<br /><br><br /><br>The authors reviewed 10 high-quality studies comprising more than 6,000 adults who received either duloxetine, milnacipran, or a placebo for up to six months. A substantial majority of study participants were middle-aged, white women.<br /><br><br /><br>"This is a very important study," says Fred Wolfe, M.D. of the National Data Bank for Rheumatic Diseases. "There's an enormous amount of advertising suggesting that these drugs really help, whereas the research data show that the improvement is really minimal."<br /><br><br /><br>Treatment with drugs alone "should be discouraged," the reviewers added. Instead, the review authors recommend a multi-faceted treatment approach including medications for those who find them helpful, exercises to improve mobility and psychological counseling to improve coping skills.<br /><br><br /><br>"The medical field does poorly with the treatment of fibromyalgia in general," says Brian Walitt, M.D., M.P.H., a co-author of the review and an expert in pain syndromes at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. "Chasing [a cure] with medicine doesn't seem to work.The people who seem to me to do best sort of figure it out on their own by thinking about things, getting to know themselves, and making changes in their lives to accommodate who they've become," concludes Walitt.<br /><br><br /><br>The only other medication approved for fibromyalgia treatment in the U.S. is the anti-convulsant pregabalin, known by the brand name Lyrica. The Cochrane Library plans to publish a review of its effectiveness later this year.<br /><br><br /><br>Intensive neuroscientific research is needed to reveal the underlying causes of fibromyalgia and other pain syndromes, say the researchers. Blue skies. Birds singing. “Biblical plants” growing in gardens. Wandering about the old stone streets and sidewalks, crowded with a wide assortment of humanity, gives me a sort of Indiana Jones feeling. Yesterday, we found a neat little “Educational Bookstore.” All the books were Palestinian polemics – not saying that disparagingly, only to name a genre. It reminds me of leftist bookshops in Argentina -- and they serve espresso. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">The best part of being here so far is Eucharist in the side chapel at the Cathedral, celebrated at 7 a.m., simply, reverently, no music, no sermon. Bishop Dawani presided today as the multitude swelled to 11. I love these services. I loved them at Harvard Divinity in 02, when Professor Coakley, an erudite systematic theologian with mystical leanings, would celebrate. (Gordon Kaufman, another famous theologian there, quoted Sarah from her student days as saying, “I am not good enough to be spiritual. I am religious.”) It was my favorite service as a parish priest. I miss this simple, reverent, quiet service so much!!! And yes, somehow the Eucharist feels special – the anamnesis more palpable  – do this in remembrance of me – here where it was instituted and first celebrated.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">On our first day of unstructured time (before the class starts), we explored the heart of the Palestinian Quarter of the Old City, that being the site of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Russian Orthodox Church featuring excavations going back to the time of Jesus. On this second and last day of unstructured time, we ambled toward (but not much into) the Jewish Quarter of the Old City, that being the site of the Western Wall and the Armenian Patriarchate. It was a process of acculturation, which goes along with overcoming jet lag. All part of getting ready for the class beginning tonight – preparation along with reading. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">One mystery I have been reading about is what Jesus did in the Temple, why he did it, and what, if anything, it had to do with his crucifixion. Huge question. It has to be set in the context of a general shift in religions around the globe in the 800 BCE to 200 CE era away from animal sacrifice toward something more spiritual like bhakti (devotion) or medication practices in Hinduism, study and practice of Torah in Judaism, etc. The Jewish shift away from Temple sacrifice and toward ethical religion goes back to the 8^thCentury prophets, particularly Micah and 2^nd Isaiah. The idea of initiation into the people of God and the engagement of the Kingdom mission outside the Temple authority structure was certainly part of Jesus’ message. But it doesn’t explain what looks like an assault on the Temple.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">Here’s a clue. Jesus’ call to repentance may have included repentance from violent nationalistic revolt. His prophesies often related to what would happen to Judah if they persisted in a path toward such an uprising. (Borg, Wright) The words that accompanied Jesus’ symbolic action were: “My Father’s house should be a house of prayer for all people, but you have made it a den of lestos.” “Lestos” is usually translated as “thieves” and understood to mean swindlers suggesting the moneychangers and purveyors of doves were ripping off the pilgrims.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 14.0pt;">“Lestos,” however, does not mean a swindler or general practitioner of theft by chicanery or slight of hand. It means one who robs by violence. It is a bandit or brigand. In 1^st Century Judah, brigands tended to be political outlaws, more like terrorists than simple thieves. Every time Josephus uses the word “lestos” it refers to such a political outlaw. Herod’s Temple was regarded as a symbolic symbol for the nationalist uprising in Jesus’ day, just as Solomon’s Temple had been in Jeremiah’s day. Jesus echoed Jeremiah in his critique of the Temple and, again like Jeremiah, foresaw its destruction not by supernatural second sight, but by counting the number of soldiers Judah had as compared to Babylon in Jeremiah’s case or Rome in Jesus’.  This analysis courtesy of N. T. Wright. For a long time, Jesus’ prophesies were interpreted literally as the end of space-time. Given that interpretation, he was simply wrong. A more historically coherent political read of his prophesies, he was tragically right. Other families had already been pulling their kids out of the school, which also faced multiple phoned-in bomb threats. France was one of the earliest chroniclers of the epidemic, first in the gay press and later for New York and national media outlets, and a man whose partner Doug Gould, to whom the film is dedicated, died of AIDS in 1992. France's documentary, distributed by IFC and Sundance Selects, has won a slew of awards since premiering in January 2012 in the documentary competition in Sundance, and then in theaters in September. (It's also now available on iTunes and Netflix). Next season, they are coming to an iPad.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">The mandatory postinjury sideline <a href="http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/concussion/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier" title="In-depth reference and news articles about Concussion." class="meta-classifier" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 153); text-decoration: none; ">concussion</a> assessment tool, instituted for the 2012 season along with a baseline test done during physicals at the start of preseason, will now be used in app form by all 32 teams, a method that was tried by a handful of teams in a pilot program last season. The hope is that being able to compare the results of a baseline test and a postinjury test side by side in real time will speed diagnosis and help doctors and trainers recognize when a player should be removed from a game. The league also plans to have independent neurological consultants on the sideline during each game to assist the team physician in diagnosing and treating players.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">The players union, which had pushed strongly for independent doctors to be on the sideline, said it was encouraged by the technological advance the new test represented, but it still had questions about how much power the independent consultants would have to make decisions about players. The union wants the independent sideline concussion experts to have almost exclusive authority in detecting concussions and administering tests, in part because it believes team doctors are often busy attending to other injured players, while the concussion experts are there for one reason.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">"If you're busy and didn't see the play, how do you know you need us?" said Dr. Thomas Mayer, the union's medical director. "This is a big enough issue we need an extra set of eyes, an extra judgment."</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">The postinjury test is quick — it takes about six to eight minutes — and shares many elements with the baseline test to allow a comparison that might indicate a decline in function. Both include a section on the players' concussion history and a 24-symptom checklist; players are asked to score themselves on a scale of 1 to 6 in categories like dizziness, confusion, irritability and sleep problems. Both note any abnormal pupil reaction or neck pain. There is a balance test and a concentration test, in which players, who are usually brought to the locker room to be evaluated, are asked to say the months of the year in reverse order, to recite a string of numbers backward and to remember a collection of words three times. Then they are asked to recall them again, without warning, at least five minutes later. The words and sequence of numbers may be changed from test to test, so players cannot memorize them from a previous test to mask concussion symptoms — a fact that has annoyed players, according to Dr. Margot Putukian, the director of athletic medicine at Princeton University Health Services and a member of the N.F.L.'s Head, Neck and Spine Committee.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">On the postinjury tests, there is one different element: a series of five questions designed to test orientation and glean how confused a player might be at that moment. They are: Where are we? What quarter is it right now? Who scored last in the practice or game? Did we win the last game? Those questions, known as Maddocks questions, were developed in the 1990s by an Australian doctor who worked with players in Australian rules football.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">"What the application does, when you are evaluating the athlete, you actually see — as they are doing their word recall — his baseline," said Putukian, who added that it was her understanding that team doctors would administer the tests. "He was able to remember 15 out of 15 words, and now he's having trouble giving you five back right away? Maybe he's only able to remember two? It gives you real-time information."</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">The tests are far from perfect tools for diagnosing concussions. Some doctors are concerned the N.F.L. tests are trying to reduce concussion evaluation to ticking items off a checklist, a problem Putukian acknowledged, emphasizing the importance of having doctors familiar with the players evaluate them. Last season, Jets running back Shonn Greene took a hit to his helmet in a game and walked unsteadily back toward the huddle before quarterback Mark Sanchez sent him off. Greene later returned to the game, and the Jets said he had passed concussion tests given in the locker room. Also last season, San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith took a hit that caused blurred vision, but he remained in the game for several plays and completed a touchdown pass before being removed. He was subsequently found to have a concussion. While he was out, the backup Colin Kaepernick took over, and Smith effectively lost his starting job.</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">"I think we have to be careful," Putukian said. "The tool, it's not the be-all, end-all. There are going to be athletes who have concussions that this tool does not pick up. It's not a perfect test. Nor is there one. We don't have one that is a perfect test."</p><p itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-size: 1.2em; margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 24px; ">She added: "Athletes may take this and perform this test and do fine on it. But you may know the athlete, athletes will stumble through it — 'Yeah, we played the Seawhawks' — you know they are struggling. It's not bang, bang, bang. They'll give you the right answers, but they are struggling. If you know that athlete, you say: 'I know you passed the test, but I know you.
