New Yorkers are paying attention.<br /><br />This morning the <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/city-recycle-compost-90-waste-report-article-1.1473457" rel="nofollow">New York Daily News</a> reported the Alliance for a Greater New York (ALIGN)  is recommending the city adopt a franchise system involving competitive bidding, a reduced number of companies and higher environmental and labor standards.<br /><br />What the newspaper missed was the creation of a strong new alliance -- Transform Don't Trash NYC -- to make that happen. The campaign to tackle the problems of New York City's commercial waste industry involves the Teamsters, <a href="http://www.alignny.org/" rel="nofollow">ALIGN</a>, environmental justice and community advocacy groups.<br /><br />A month away from Election Day, mayoral and city council candidates would do well to listen to their message.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.teamstersnewyorkcity.org/" rel="nofollow">Teamsters Joint Council 16</a> President George Miranda said at a City Hall news conference today:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">Today is the day we make New York City a better place to live and work.</blockquote>Miranda told the press wages are falling in New York's commercial waste industry, with new hires in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island earning just below $20,000 a year:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">This industry has become a "Wild West." They are animals that can love you back and care for you as much as you care for them.</p>  <p>Angel On A Leash is a New York based organization that has taken this one step further and leverages the outstanding caring and healing capacity of dogs. Through their research and work, they have proven that "therapy dogs help people physically, emotionally and socially. It's known as the therapeutic touch."</p>  <p>David Frei, known to millions of fans and viewers as the longtime co-host of the annual telecast of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and National Dog Show, is the founder of Angel On a Leash. When asked what inspired him to found Angel On A Leash, Mr. Frei told us that he was inspired to create the organization when his dog Belle passed away in the summer of 2009 and he wrote an obit for her talking about all the things she had done and shared it with his friends. He further explained that "When Teigh passed in January of 2010, I wrote something for him too and thought, well, the time has come to put this together into a book. I had accumulated (at least in my mind) a number of stories through the years that I thought could help make the book appealing in a way that would share what therapy dogs do for people every day. The book was later nominated for DWAA Award for best depiction of the human animal bond."</p>  <p>What Frie had in mind was simple; he wanted to create the best therapy dog programs in healthcare facilities and other settings. He had visited the Ronald McDonald House where the patients were exclusively pediatric oncology patients, and "To see them and their families battle that terrible disease every day and try to maintain some normalcy in their lives was both heartbreaking and heartwarming," Frie said.  He was inspired by these children and further by the women at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where he visited each week.</p>  <p>That's when he knew that through dog therapy, he could help those that need it most. Angel On A Leash sets itself apart from other animal therapy programs through their customized approach to therapy. They recognize that each facility has its own unique needs and culture and therefore use only the most highly trained teams of insured volunteer handlers and their dogs. The therapy dogs must also be certified and registered.</p>  <p>What began as a charitable activity of the Westminster Kennel Club in 2004, operating solely at the New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, has now grown into a therapy dog program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, the Fisher House at the Michael DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and Ronald McDonald Houses in Memphis and Milwaukee.</p>  <p>For the past seven years, Mr. Frei's wife Cheryl has been the Chaplain and Director of Family Support at the Ronald McDonald House of New York. The pair work closely together and share not just their lives but a common goal, to promote the role of the human-canine bond in enhancing human health and quality of life. <span style="font-family: inherit;">A New York City construction worker who is union is twice as likely to be African-American as a New York City construction worker who is nonunion. </span><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">That's the conclusion of the <a href="http://epi.org/" rel="nofollow">Economic Policy Institute</a> in a recent <a href="http://www.epi.org/blog/racial-underrepresentation-construction/" rel="nofollow">study</a> by Larry Mishel. The study shows the pattern is similar for the workforce living in the larger New York City metropolitan area.  </span><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Conversely, New York City Latinos are less likely to belong to unions -- and more likely to be killed on the job. The <a href="http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/news/2013/10/24/new-york-latino-construction-workers-more-likely-to-die-on-job-report-says/" rel="nofollow">Center for Popular Democracy</a> studied OSHA statistics for New York City and discovered Latinos accounted for three-fourths of construction site deaths from 2003-11. According to <a href="http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/news/2013/10/24/new-york-latino-construction-workers-more-likely-to-die-on-job-report-says/" rel="nofollow">Fox News Latino</a>,</span><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Construction safety advocates and a study by the New York State Trial Lawyers Association cited safety violations on job sites run by smaller, non-union contractors and an unwillingness by some undocumented workers to report violations as main reasons for the high number of deaths among Latino workers.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></blockquote><span style="font-family: inherit;">The two studies paint a picture of unions as beneficial to the safety and prosperity of New Yorkers (something we all knew already, right?).</span><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">An alliance of unions --including <a href="http://www.teamsterslocal282.com/" rel="nofollow">Teamsters Local 282</a> -- called <a href="http://www.buildupnyc.org/about/" rel="nofollow">Build Up NYC</a> is advocating for a stronger and more vibrant middle-class in New York City. Build Up NYC is promoting development that pays workers good wages and maintains safe work sites. In his late 80s, the former New York mayor looked his age in the film, but he was still very sharp and quite funny — and as needy as he’d always been for public attention and approval. As Ed Koch matter-of-factly uttered those words, early in the movie, the audience, full of former staff aides, political loyalists and New York movers-and-shakers, chuckled knowingly. Throughout his political life, Koch’s ego had never been far from the surface. It says here that his egotism is part of what made him a great mayor.</div><div itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Koch had planned to be in the audience Tuesday night. He had cooperated fully with Barsky and had given a few interviews in the run-up to the premiere. He was clearly looking forward to basking in the spotlight again. But earlier that day he had been admitted to the hospital. By Friday, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/02/nyregion/edward-i-koch-ex-mayor-of-new-york-dies.html" style="color: #666699;" title="His obituary in The Times">he was dead</a>. Is it tasteless to say he couldn’t have planned a better promotional campaign? Probably. But Koch himself would have laughed at the joke. Which was another thing about him: He was probably the last mayor of New York to have a sense of humor.</div><div itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Like Koch, Barsky was born in the Bronx. A former Wall Street Journal reporter and hedge fund manager, he was in college when Koch was first elected mayor. About 10 years ago, he told me, he had driven around the South Bronx, an area he hadn’t ventured into in decades. He was stunned to see, as he put it, that “I couldn’t find any of the old burned-out buildings” that he recalled from the 1970s. “They had all been replaced with real housing.”</div><div itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Affordable housing was a big part of Koch’s legacy, Barsky realized; indeed, under Koch, the city spent $5 billion on housing, more than the next 50 American cities combined. The memory of that tour of the South Bronx stuck with him. When Barsky closed his hedge fund to become a filmmaker, Koch was an obvious subject.</div><div itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Which is not to say the film is a big wet kiss. Yes, it gives plenty of credit where it is due: Koch’s sound financial management brought the city back from the brink of bankruptcy. He helped New York regain its confidence. He took on the transit union. He began the process that led to the renewal of Times Square and other areas of the city. He reduced the rampant crime that had created such a climate of fear in New York.</div><div itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">But Barsky is also cleareyed about his foibles. Koch’s lack of empathy. His contentious and at times ugly relationship with the black community. His slowness to react to the AIDS crisis. Barsky tackles the rumors that Koch was a closeted gay man, asking him point-blank about his sexuality. “None of your business,” replied Koch, in somewhat more pungent language. (<a href="http://gothamist.com/2013/02/01/koch_gays_and_aids.php" style="color: #666699;">Many gay activists are convinced</a> that Koch didn’t do more during the AIDS crisis because he was uncomfortable with his own sexuality. But the totality of Koch’s record — he was a leader in pushing for gay rights — suggests otherwise, at least to me.)</div><div itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">What was most striking about “Koch,” however, was the extent to which, for Hizzoner, it was always about, well, Ed Koch. He needlessly picks fights, calling people “schmucks” and “idiots” when they disagreed with him. He takes actions designed to win him praise in the media. One of his former aides recalls him saying, after reading the paper, that nothing of note had happened that day. What he meant was that he wasn’t mentioned. “How’m I doin’?” wasn’t just a trademark phrase; it was an expression of a deep psychological need. On the other hand, if that is what drove him to spend $5 billion on new housing, who can complain?</div><div itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">A few days after the “Koch” premiere, I went to see “Fiorello!,” a 1959 musical about another great New York mayor, Fiorello H. LaGuardia, which is having <a href="http://www.nycitycenter.org/tickets/productionNew.aspx?performanceNumber=6623" style="color: #666699;">a short run at City Center</a>. LaGuardia was also an egotist, who loved “the people” more than he did people, who reformed city government yet who also had a profound need to be at the center of every orbit he entered.</div><div itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Indeed, the same can largely be said of our current mayor, Michael Bloomberg, whose view of himself as a Great Man doing a Great Job is so ingrained that, according to The New York Times, he has tried to recruit someone he thinks has sufficient stature to succeed him.</div><div itemprop="articleBody" style="color: black; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.467em; margin-bottom: 1em;">New York’s three greatest mayors were also three of its great egotists. It’s no accident.</div></h6></div>
